What is a Seroma?
Understanding Post-Surgical Fluid Accumulation &
Safe Care | Columbus, Ohio
A seroma is a collection of fluid that builds up beneath the skin, commonly occurring after surgery.

This fluid is not simply “lymph” being pushed out—it is a mixture of serous fluid, inflammatory byproducts, and healing components produced by the body.

Why Seromas Form
After surgery, tissues are disrupted and the lymphatic system is temporarily overwhelmed.

This can lead to -
• fluid accumulation
• inflammation
• swelling
• pockets of fluid beneath the skin
Seromas are most common after -
• liposuction
• tummy tuck
• breast surgery
• reconstructive procedures
Why Proper Evaluation Matters

✔ physician
✔ nurse
✔ qualified medical provider
Treatment may involve monitoring or medical drainage if necessary.

What Manual Lymphatic Drainage Can Do
Manual Lymphatic Drainage may help reduce surrounding swelling, support lymphatic movement and assist the body in reabsorbing fluid.
However -
👉 MLD does NOT remove seromas directly

What MLD Does NOT Do
✖ does not use needles
✖ does not extract fluid
