Who Should NOT Receive
Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Important Safety Guidelines for Lymphatic Therapy | Columbus, Ohio
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, highly specialized therapy designed to stimulate lymphatic circulation, reduce swelling, and support the body’s natural detoxification and healing processes. While lymphatic drainage therapy can be extremely beneficial for many conditions, there are certain situations where treatment may need to be postponed or modified for safety reasons.
At Full Circle Vitality in Columbus, Ohio, every treatment begins with a careful assessment to ensure that lymphatic drainage is appropriate for the client’s individual health status.
Valerie Dupree, CLT, CMLDT, LMT, brings more than 31 years of clinical experience in therapeutic bodywork and lymphatic therapy, ensuring that treatments are performed safely and responsibly according to established medical guidelines.
Situations Where Manual Lymphatic Drainage May Not Be Appropriate
Certain medical conditions may temporarily prevent someone from receiving lymphatic drainage therapy.
Acute Infection
If the body is actively fighting a bacterial or systemic infection, stimulating lymphatic flow may spread infection throughout the lymphatic system. Treatment should be postponed until the infection has resolved.
Acute Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Clients with an active or suspected blood clot should not receive lymphatic drainage treatment until cleared by a physician, as increased circulation could potentially dislodge a clot.
Uncontrolled Congestive Heart Failure
Because lymphatic drainage moves fluid back into circulation, individuals with uncontrolled heart failure may not be able to safely process the increased fluid load.
Certain Kidney Conditions
The kidneys play a key role in eliminating fluid moved during lymphatic drainage therapy. Individuals with severe or uncontrolled kidney disease should consult their physician before treatment.
Untreated Malignancy
In some cases involving active cancer without medical management, lymphatic drainage may require physician guidance to ensure treatment is appropriate.
However, oncology-related lymphatic therapy is commonly used for lymphedema and post-cancer treatment swelling when performed by a trained therapist.
Situations That May Require Modified Treatment
Some clients may still benefit from lymphatic therapy, but sessions may need to be adjusted or carefully tailored.
Examples include -
• autoimmune conditions
• chronic inflammatory disorders
• recent surgery
• pregnancy
• complex medical conditions
A trained lymphatic therapist evaluates these situations carefully before proceeding.
Why Proper Training Matters
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is not a typical massage technique. It requires advanced understanding of -
-
lymphatic anatomy
-
fluid dynamics
-
pathology
-
safe drainage pathways
